Surrounding Area

Doddiscombsleigh is situated about six miles to the South-West of Exeter in typically rolling Devon countryside.

Town Barton is well placed for wedding guests, being close to The Great Barn at Higher Ashton, Haldon Belvedere and Canonteign Falls.

Westpoint Exhibition Centre is just 8 miles away.

Methods of travel in the area are numerous. The airport is close enough to be useful and far enough to be quiet. The nearest rail station is in Exeter and there is even a bus service and a local taxi.

Things to do

Haldon Forest Park

Provides an ever increasing range of activities.  In addition to cycling and walking there is Go-Ape and Go Segway and wild birds of prey.

Cycling

Bikes are popular, especially as  Haldon Forest Park is only two miles away where there is cycle hire and a dedicated area for mountain bikers.

Riding

Horses too are well catered for here with ten miles of trails and gallops.

Walking

There are many footpaths to explore on foot and The Dartmoor National Park boundary is only a mile away and the river Teign Valley is spectacular walking country to Castle Drogo and beyond.

Golf

The Teign Valley Golf Club is our nearest and there are others at Exeter, Stover, Dawlish ,Teignmouth and Bovey Tracey

Fishing

The river Teign is a delight for traditional wild brown trout fishing and Kennick reservoir is only five miles away. We highly recommend the services of Tom Hill for guiding and fly-fishing tuition, whether beginner or expert

Nature watching

The Haldon Hills are home to many birds of prey and over thirty species of butterflies.

Avocets

The Exe estuary is internationally important for its birds, with up to 25,000 wildfowl and wading birds flocking to the estuary in winter. They are attracted by the mild climate and abundant food in the estuary silt. Up to 40 species of bird can be seen from the RSPB's avocet cruises from November to March. Stuart Line Cruises also have regular bird watching trips.

Horse Racing

Exeter Racecourse is just a few miles away at Haldon. It is the highest racecourse in the land at 850 feet, the second longest at 2 miles and has been described as not only one of the loveliest courses, but one of the fairest tracks in the country. Horse Racing was first recorded here 350 years ago in the reign of Charles II and since then many a great National Hunt champion has started their career at Exeter - such as Best Mate and Desert Orchid. Newton Abbot racecourse is only 7 miles away.
